At the end of May through June 2011, Pike fishing was “Hot and Heavy” on Comins Lake, with Pike in the 18-27 inch range, many fish over 30 inches, and a phenomenal 45 inch monster. There were three Pike caught over 40 inches this last season.
The Pike move out of their spawn in the shallows in late April and disperse throughout the lake by the end of May. Some fish do remain in the shallows however, so a good strategy is to fish both deeper and shallow water at this time, Mepps Bucktail Spinners- 7-9”, large Spoons (Daredevils, ect.) ¾-1oz., buzz baits, Large Zara Spooks and Stickbaits (6” XRap, Bomber) are good choices.
Anglers should consider tackle that is heavier than what is generally used for trout or bass. Either Spinning or Baitcasting outfits will be fine. Good rod choices are 6-6 ½ ft. med. hvy. to heavy, rated for 10-30lb. test line. Reels should be in the same weight range with good drag control, Braided, fused, co-polymer or monofilament lines are all adequate choices as long as they are rated 14lb. test or higher. Because of Pikes extremely sharp teeth, wire leaders 10”-18”, 18lb. test are a must. As are long, needle nose pliers! Do keep your hands out of their mouths.
YA’LL COME
FOR A GREAT WEEK-END OF FISHING
